Arsene Wenger has reportedly sent scouts to the Ligue 1 talent pool once again with Toulouse defender Issa Diop at the top of the list. The Gunners had representatives as Dia’s side met PSG over the weekend but they’ll face stiff competition for the 20-year-old (via Sport Witness).
There may be growing speculation over Arsene Wenger’s future at Arsenal but it seems that the club are still planning for the future.
Reports in France indicate that the Gunners sent scouts to Toulouse’s trip to PSG. The game finished 0-0 and after picking up an impressive clean sheet, France Football claim that Arsenal were focussed on Toulouse youngster Issa Diop.
The publication reports that Arsenal will face some competition for the player. Scouts from Tottenham Hotspur were also in attendance and the player has also been the subject of reported interest from Manchester City.
Diop is a 20-year-old centre-back who has represented France at youth level up to under-21. He stands well over six feet and has been a regular part of the Toulouse side since breaking through in November last season.
In terms of playing style, stature and history, there are obvious comparisons between Diop and Chelsea man Kurt Zouma. With Diop, Zouma, Presnel Kimpembe, Samuel Umtiti and Aymeric Laporte, France is a country spoilt with young centre-backs right now.
The Gunners aren’t exactly bare in the position either. Rob Holding is the obvious standout name but there are also Calum Chambers as well as Shkodran Mustafi who is still just 24. Issa Diop is an interesting prospect but would need to be an upgrade on what Arsenal already have if he is to be a worthwhile signing.
