Arsenal Target Premier League Winner Kasper Schmeichel

Arsenal have eyes on Premier League Champion and Leicester City star goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel to challenge Petr Cech for the No.1 shirt next season with David Ospina likely to depart in the summer in search of regular game time (via Mirror).

As reports of an agreement over a new two-year deal for Arsene Wenger surfaces, it seems likely the Frenchman will remain in charge for the foreseeable future and is eager to strengthen the side significantly this summer.

A huge dark cloud surrounds Emirates at the moment with a mixture of poor form, the uncertain future over the manager and many of the clubs stars potentially on the way out this summer – the Arsenal board have little choice but to invest significantly in the transfer market to fix a number of problems throughout the squad.

Petr Cech has drawn plenty of criticism this season, clearly showing his age on a number of occasions as well as his vulnerability to muscular injuries as he faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after a recent calf strain. Although his Arsenal career is certainly not over, next season he will need to be pushed further and David Ospina isn’t necessarily the man to do it.

The Colombian has continually played second fiddle while at the club under Arsene Wenger, used primarily as a Cup goalkeeper since Cech’s arrival from Chelsea in the summer of 2015.

Enter Kasper Schmeichel. While Leicester struggled until the departure of Claudio Ranieri, Schmeichel has been solid throughout the season and has become one of the leagues finest shot stoppers. His Champions League exploits will only heighten his pedigree and is currently valued at approximately £6.8m (via ).

There is of course Wojciech Szczesny to consider as he looks set to return to Arsenal after his loan spell ends at Roma, however despite some decent performances in Italy he still hasn’t reached the heights many had hoped he’d reach.

At 30-years-old, Schmeichel is in the prime of his career and could be an exciting acquisition.
