Arsene Wenger: Why this Arsenal player is the best in England Liverpool v Arsenal combined XI

ARSENAL boss Arsene Wenger believes Laurent Koscielny is the best central defender in the Premier League.

Koscielny has developed into a key player for the Gunners, captaining the side in the absence of the injured club captain Per Mertesacker.

And the Frenchman is likely to take his place in the starting XI against Liverpool tomorrow after recovering from a hamstring injury.

The 31-year-old suffered the injury against Bayern Munich and Arsenal conceded four goals without him.

But Wenger believes there is still room for improvement for Koscielny.

He told Arsenal.com: “He is the guy who has the experience, who leads the defence and overall of course we have seen at Bayern that he is a very important piece of the puzzle at the back.

“Of course I’m happy to have him back.

Arsene Wenger is a big fan of Laurent Koscielny

“I think he’s at the top in the Premier League, yes. But I’ve always believed that.

"I think that there’s more to come from him as well because when he arrived here he was a bit shy. I think he has taken a different dimension. He always had the top quality but I think it comes more out of him and I still think there is more to come.”
