Ozil: Arsenal Deserved To Win By More

Mesut Ozil says the scoreline did not reflect Arsenal’s dominance after the Gunners continued their recent excellent form to see off Basel 2-0 at the Emirates on Wednesday night in the Champions League.

Theo Walcott was the hero for the hosts scoring twice in the first half to set up victory which moves the north Londoners to the top of Group A with four points after two games.

The 27-year-old headed home Alexis Sanchez’s cross to open the scoring after just seven minutes before grabbing his second of the evening with a right-footed strike 20 minutes later to seal victory for the hosts.

However, Arsenal had chances to further extend their lead with Sanchez, Ozil and Alex Iwobi going close but unable to beat goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik in the Basel goal.

Ozil took to Twitter after the game to praise his team for their victory although he insisted his team should have won by a far greater margin such was their dominance of the game.

WIN! 👌 Final scoreline doesn't reflect our performance at all. But definitely very happy about our next victory! 👍😉 #YaGunnersYa #AFCvBAS pic.twitter.com/kBxXJCNrEp

The victory leaves Arsenal in great shape in the group ahead of a double header against Ludogorets who lie bottom of the table with just one point after being beaten by Paris Saint-Germain and having drawn against Basel in their opening fixture.

Indeed home and away victories over Ludogorets would leave Arsenal with 10 points and in pole position in the group ahead of return games against PSG at the Emirates and a tricky trip to Basel.

Recent seasons have highlighted the importance of finishing top of the group, something Wenger alluded to before Wednesday night’s clash, and the victory leaves Arsenal with a great chance of topping the pile and hopefully securing a more favourable tie should they progress to the knockout stages.
