Adam Johnson to decide himself whether he plays for Sunderland against Stoke

The club have made the England midfielder available after the 27-year-old was charged with three offences of sexual activity with a child under 16 and one of grooming.

Sunderland travel to Stoke City in the Premier League looking to increase the one-point gap on the relegation zone.

Dick Advocaat is keen to include Johnson in his 18-man squad, and was set to assess the former Manchester City winger during an afternoon training session at the club's Academy of Light on Friday.

Sunderland's Dutch head coach said: "Adam still has to come in but in principle if he feels okay he will be a member of the squad.

"The club has made a statement and I stay behind that and we'll see what the future will bring."

Johnson was charged on Thursday after answering bail and is due to appear before County Durham Magistrates Court on May 20.

He was arrested on March 2 and initially suspended by the club, but he was later allowed to resume training and has since made three appearances from the bench.

A club statement said: "Following yesterday’s statement from Durham Constabulary, the club recognises that the formal legal process must take its course and whilst our position remains unchanged, we will keep the matter under review. The club will not be making any further comment."

Steven Fletcher is out of the trip to the Britannia Stadium after Sunderland's Scotland international forward suffered an ankle injury.
