Olivier Giroud set Arsenal on their way to a routine win

Giroud scored a sublime goal that evoked memories of Henrikh Mkhitaryan's recent goal for Manchester United against Sunderland, as they beat the Eagles 2-0 at the Emirates.

The Frenchman has struggled to curry favour under Arsene Wenger this term, but he reminded everyone what he is capable of.

Arsenal were dominant from the first whistle and Giroud netted the opener after 17 minutes.

A swift counter-attack resulted in Alexis Sanchez picking out Giroud.

Although he had a lot of work to do, he somehow scooped out a left-footed back-heeled strike that went in off the underside of the bar.

In many respects, this was a game of attack versus defence.

After spurning some presentable opportunities, Iwobi wrapped up the points in the 56th minute when he headed home Nacho Monreal's cross despite the efforts of Scott Dann to keep it out on the line.

Palace eventually managed to draw Petr Cech into action, and he did well to keep out Yohan Cabaye's fierce drive.

But Allardyce's miserable record in north London against the Gunners continued - his 10th defeat in all.

Arsenal now climb back above Tottenham, who beat Watford 4-1 earlier today, into third spot courtesy of this win.
