The Gunners faced an in-form Southampton side that have already claimed points from the likes of United and Liverpool this season and surprisingly held the best defensive record in Europe conceding just five this season prior to their visit to Emirates Stadium. However a pair of silly defensive mistakes cost the Saints dearly as Olivier Giroud profited from a goalkeeper error and a penalty to net twice and extend his London tally to 17. Incredibly, he has just scored one Premier League goal outside of London, with 14 of his 18 goals coming inside the Emirates.
A solid defensive performance helped provide the platform for the 2-0 win, and the result seemed another example of getting the three points when we aren’t necessarily at our best.
