Arsenal manager responds to Jack Wilshere to Man City rumours

Arsene Wenger has played down Manchester City’s reported interest in Jack Wilshere and says Arsenal are under no pressure to sell him.

There was some typical dross in the tabloids this week claiming the England international could be a summer target for the reigning Premier League champions.

The suggested after Wilshere’s appearance in an U21 game on Tuesday night that City could try and tempt Arsenal into selling him this summer with a £30 million bid.

But in his pre-Burnley press conference, Arsene Wenger was quick and definitive in pouring cold water on such rumours:

“You can imagine my answer and send it to Sky Sports News,” he said according to the .

“We are not in a position anymore where we have to sell our best players.

“Everybody can have a really big impact over the rest of the season, Jack included.

“That depends on the game, the fitness, the availability and the need of the team. Everybody is exactly the same.”

Wilshere’s current contract expires in 2018 according to , but Arsenal are set to offer the 23-year-old a new, £150,000-a-week deal which will keep him in north London until 2020, says the report.

Seasons ago you might have expected Arsenal to cave to such a demand and accept the cash. We certainly have the pedigree; Cesc Fabregas, Nasri and van Persie, for instance, were all sold before they had reached their peak.

But now after consecutive summers where we’ve acquired the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, that defeatist mindset has clearly changed and we no longer need to sell players to break even financially.
