Paris Saint-Germain Pogba's potential PSG arrival would be a coup but issues would still remain

ESPN FC's Steve Nicol and Janusz Michallik discuss Paul Pogba's future and predict how good the central midfielder can become.

According to reports this week, Juventus' star midfielder . Shortly after those rumours emerged, it was claimed that the French capital outfit are now at the front of the queue for the 22-year-old with the player's Italian employers.

There are a number of obstacles that PSG would have to overcome if they are to make Pogba theirs this summer, but there is no doubting that the interest from Les Parisiens in the French international is very real.

If the move does happen at the end of this season, then it will be a major coup for the Ligue 1 club -- despite the massive proposed transfer fee.

So many reasons make Pogba and PSG a good match. ESPN FC's Michael Cox , particularly the fact that there might never be a more ideal big name signing for the club's ambitious Qatari owners than a high-profile young French international with superstar potential who also hails from Paris.

The recent reports also bring the realisation of a mouth-watering fantasy football central midfield pairing of Pogba and Marco Verratti closer to reality. Added to the current starting XI, likely in the place of Thiago Motta, the Juventus man would make an already talented team even stronger.

In that respect, going for Pogba now -- with Barcelona out of the picture because of their current transfer ban -- makes a lot of sense.

There might never be a better moment for PSG to snare the Frenchman and the price, although already significant, would undoubtedly grow if he remains in Turin for another season. While UEFA's Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations are an issue for PSG, this is something that they can ill-afford to let happen.

However, the signing of Pogba this summer would only have a limited short-term impact in helping PSG to achieve their main goal next season.

The French giants' main ambition lies in Europe and the UEFA Champions League, not in Ligue 1 or either of France's domestic cups.

We saw in their two-legged defeat to Barcelona in this season's Champions League quarterfinal that once this PSG team is missing two or three key players, that there is not enough squad depth to remain competitive against the continent's elite sides.

A number of areas in Laurent Blanc's squad need strengthening this summer and the signing of Pogba would only supplement one of them.

There is no doubt that the arrival of the Frenchman would make one of Europe's best midfield units stronger. However, when Verratti, Thiago Motta and Blaise Matuidi are all fully fit and available, they are one of the best trios around anyway.

If PSG were able to sign France international Paul Pogba, it would give the club arguably the best midfield in European football.

Assuming that Pogba does arrive at Parc des Princes this summer, one of those three will be pushed out to accommodate the new signing. In all likelihood, it would be either Motta or Matuidi as both -- despite the Italian's advancing years -- are too good for a place on the bench.

Beyond that current trio, there is not enough quality in depth in the PSG midfield.

French international Yohan Cabaye has failed to prove that he can add anything significant to the current group and is likely to be sold at a loss. PSG have 20-year-old sensation Adrien Rabiot, who is an extremely promising talent, but he is still lacking the necessary maturity to make him a viable option in big games like the Barcelona one and that is something that will only come with time.

The defence is another area of concern for Laurent Blanc. Captain Thiago Silva is injury-prone, although many of his physical problems this season stemmed from last summer's FIFA World Cup, while David Luiz and Marquinhos have both struggled with their own fitness issues during this campaign. Veteran Zoumana Camara ceased to be a reliable backup option a long time ago.

Right-back Gregory van der Wiel regularly looks out of his depth, failing to build on his impressive displays last term. However, PSG may have found a solution at the position with Serge Aurier. He had a relatively promising debut campaign in Paris despite being hampered by a series of unfortunate injuries and a successful tour of duty with eventual winners Cote d'Ivoire at this year's Africa Cup of Nations.

Young left-back Lucas Digne has yet to truly impress and does not look anywhere near ready to take over from old-stager Maxwell anytime soon. That is concerning as the Brazilian has started to show his age in recent weeks after .

In attack, question marks hang over the futures of both Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi -- despite Al-Khelaifi's insistence that . Overall, this season's front line has looked short of at least one quality option wide on the left. But the problems don't end there.

Goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu has found his status as the team's first choice goalkeeper questioned by the French press after some shaky performances both domestically and on the continent since the start of 2015.

With that in mind, it is clear that PSG have a substantial amount of rebuilding to do before next season and that is going to require as much transfer budget flexibility as possible.

If Pogba does arrive, it will be at high cost and that will mean there would be little or no room for manoeuvre without significant departures. Added to that, Les Parisiens' FFP restraints for this summer are not even known yet. One or two sales might be required before the French international can even be obtained.

Pogba coming in would make an already strong starting XI even stronger, but PSG's overall squad depth would -- at best -- remain unchanged.

Still, the signing of the Juventus star would also secure a potential future icon and face for the French capital outfit's ambitious project for when Zlatan Ibrahimovic finally moves on. However, it would not address PSG's true current problems.

If those squad depth issues are not addressed this summer, there is no guarantee that the arrival of Pogba alone would mean progress to the semifinal of the Champions League or better next season.
