Arsenal host Liverpool this weekend in what will be a decisive match for the top four race. Now that the Gunners have a myriad of stars fit, Arsene Wenger potentially has a tough decision to make over who retains the important No 10 position.
Santi Cazorla has made the position his own in recent months after some superb performances in central midfield. The versatile, ambidextrous Spaniard is enjoying his football; whether it’s playing deep or as the No 10, Santi has been nifty in the engine room dictating possession and spraying passes around. His ability to get out of tight spaces has often opened up our attack and seems the most obvious candidate for the fabled attacking midfield role.
When Santi was asked to play a little deeper however, Mesut Ozil reminded us how good he really is in the German’s preferred attacking midfield role. He was sublime in the 2-0 win over Monaco, firing in perfect balls up to Olivier Giroud from deep, difficult positions to unlock the French outfit’s defence.
He received a rest against Newcastle, went to a Berlin to wish his friend a quick happy birthday, and then got some minutes under his belt with Germany. Ozil seems the most natural No 10 long term, but on form Santi may have the edge.
Jack Wilshere is returning to fitness and is another who has thrived at times in a more advanced position, but you have to say Tomas Rosicky is a more natural fit ahead of the Englishman. The Czech has been a consistent performer in the latter part of the season in recent campaigns but faces a tough task getting into the Arsenal XI.
It’s fantastic that we have a host of options in the engine room that can both play in advanced roles or box-to-box, now it’s up to Wenger to utilize the right players necessary to finish the job. Starting with Liverpool.
