On 10 April 1948, Arsenal won the First Division Championship after a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town at Leeds Road. With a gap of seven points between Arsenal and second placed Manchester United, the Old Trafford side were unable to close the gap despite having three games in hand. This is because during the post-World War 2 era, a win for a game was only 2 points and not 3 as it stands in modern day football.
The Gunners seemed to have wrapped up the title 12 days earlier when they hammered Middlesbrough 7-0 at Highbury, but a string of disappointing performances against Blackpool, Middlesbrough again and Blackburn ensured that Tom Whittaker’s side were crowned winners of the prestigious title on the last day of the season. The victory was the club’s sixth title won in the 49th season of The Football League.
Today, Arsenal is one of the most decorated sides in English football having won 13 League titles and 11 FA Cups. The Gunners – under the stewardship of French manager Arsene Wenger – are currently second in the Premier League standings with 63 points, only seven points behind leaders Chelsea who have a game in hand.
If all goes well, Arsenal could win the domestic double to add on to the Community Shield that they won at the start of the season.
