Giroud was handed his first Premier League start of the season on Boxing Day, with Alexis Sanchez moving out wide as Wenger made changes to his side following consecutive defeats to Everton and Manchester City.

The change certainly proved dividends with Giroud scoring the only goal of the game, his seventh goal in his last five starts for the Gunners in all competitions.

While was not at his best against Sunderland he has certainly provided yet another decisive moment, in much the same vein as his late winner against Manchester United.

Whether he remains in the starting line-up for the visit of Crystal Palace on New Year’s Day remains to be seen but he is certainly playing a crucial role in the club’s title charge this season
