Arsenal transfer news and rumours: Gunners to battle Man United for Benfica star Goncalo Guedes?

Goncalo Guedes is wanted by Arsenal and Manchester United, according to reports.

The Manchester Evening News say the two Premier League sides will face competition from each other in the race to sign the 19-year-old winger.

Guedes' current contract expires in 2021 and the player is believed to have a buy-out clause of £52million.

The 19-year-old is highly rated at Parkhead and Manchester City are also said to be interested in acquiring his services.

It is claimed by The Sun that Arsene Wenger wants to sign a new left-back, with Nacho Monreal now in his thirties and Kieran Gibbs currently unfancied.

Tierney, who has played 50 times for Celtic since making his debut in 2014, has already been capped by Scotland.

Gazidis drops Wenger exit hint

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has given the first hint that the club could be planning for life after Arsene Wenger, writes Darren Lewis.

The Frenchman’s contract expires at the end of the season and Wenger, who celebrated his 20th anniversary this month, has made it clear that he will not be rushed into deciding his future.

But Gazidis said: “Arsenal is not Arsene Wenger. They're not one in the same thing.”

The Gunners are unbeaten since the opening day of the season with seven wins from their nine subsequent games. They currently sit third in the table, two points off leaders Manchester City.

Gazidis insisted the north Londoners remain relaxed about Wenger’s future and are in no hurry.

He added: "He's been clear and we've always been clear, that's a mutual decision as to how long he'll continue.

"Both need to be on the same page on that. In a __football sense, he has transformed the club.”

Bellerin boost

Arsenal's hopes of keeping Hector Bellerin at the Emirates have received a boost after Barcelona appeared to take their search for a right-back elsewhere, writes Ed Malyon.

Barcelona are huge admirers of Hector Bellerin

The 21-year-old defender, who came through Barca's famed La Masia academy before being poached by the Gunners, is seen by the Nou Camp club as someone who possesses 'Barca DNA' and ticks a lot of boxes for them as they look for a long-term replacement for legendary full-back Dani Alves.

So far this season they have made do with versatile midfielder Sergi Roberto, who has been outstanding since he first began to fill in on the right side of defence last year.

But the Spanish champions need a more long-term solution and sporting director Robert Fernandez is on the record as praising the "fantastic" Bellerin and how he'd fit in at Barca.

Barcelona, who need reinforcements soon, know that prising the Gunner away from the Emirates would be a long, drawn-out and expensive process.

For around half of the fee it would require to sign the Arsenal man they could secure Joao Cancelo from Valencia, and SPORT reports on Thursday morning that the two La Liga clubs are already in talks over a transfer.

Ozil: Mertesacker is my role model

Mesut Ozil has lauded Arsenal captain Per Mertesacker as his role model and hopes his fellow German returns to fitness soon, writes Jack Rathborn.

Mertesacker has been out over the last few months with a knee injury and Ozil insists he has been sorely missed, despite the form of Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi.

As former teammates at Werder Bremen, Ozil insists Mertesacker is a big miss for the Gunners and that he helps everybody at the club.

“I’ve known Per for a while, because we’ve played together in Bremen, for the national team and here too,” Ozil revealed to Arsenal Player.

“I can only say positives about him. He gives everything for the team, not just for himself, but for everyone.

“Off the pitch, he watches the games and comes into the dressing room. He’s just a role model and we’re pleased to have him here. I want him to get fit again and back on the pitch as quickly as possible.

“I sincerely hope that he comes back really quickly.”

But Arsenal defender Koscielny hopes that the nation do not expect too much from Pogba, who became the world's most expensive footballer this summer.

The 23-year-old completed an £89million transfer to Manchester United, where he has taken his time to adapt to the Premier League.

It follows a disappointing European Championships this summer, where many believe that Pogba did not perform to his required standard.

"Because of his transfer and his status, we demand a lot from Paul Pogba," Koscielny said. "We’ve got to leave him in peace so he can progress."
