Szczesny blames Mertesacker for their defensive shortcomings

Maciej Szczesny – the father to first choice goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny – has lashed out at 2014 World Cup winner Per Mertesacker for committing much of the defensive errors that have eventually cost the team valuable points against very beatable Premier League oppositions.

The finger pointing by the 49-year old comes in the wake of a series of criticisms on Szczesny’s behavior on and off the pitch. The Arsenal shot stopper was accused of not only being at fault for the two goals conceded against Southampton, but also for smoking in the showers right after the loss.

It is alleged that Arsene Wenger was displeased with the behavior and as such, the club has fined the 24-year old a staggering £20,000.

Although Maciej admitted that Szczesny occasionally smokes, he insisted that his son is responsible enough not to smoke in the dressing room:

What the British papers wrote about my son smoking under the shower after Southampton game, this is bollocks.

It doesn’t surprise me as they are known for making stuff up. I have heard Wojciech smokes sometimes but he’s not that stupid to smoke in the dressing room.”

The former Poland goalkeeper also insisted that the club should focus on sorting out their defence which he in his own words termed as “disastrous” rather than laying all the burdens of their losses on Szczesny’s shoulders.

In regards to the defeat against The Saints during the New Year, Maciej Szczesny confessed that the Arsenal number one was fully responsible for the first goal claiming he came too far from the goal, thereby enabling Mane capitalize on the error.

Be that as it may, he blamed the two central defenders for not playing their role in that particular predicament.

Laurent Koscielny should immediately have run [back] to protect Wojciech, and Per Mertesacker should have stood in the goal.

He particularly lashed out at Mertesacker stating:

In that situation Mertesacker showed the agility of a rhinoceros.

Maciej also blamed the Arsenal coaching staff for not doing enough to support Szczesny during these trying times.

What a ridiculous series of comments that will do little to aid Szczesny’s reputation at the club and among his team mates. Utter prick.
