Kieran Gibbs has been called into the England squad to replace Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand who limped out of the Three Lions’ 2-0 win over Malta on Saturday.
Bertrand started the game at Wembley but lasted just 19 minutes after suffering what appeared to be a hamstring injury and having to be substituted for Danny Rose.
England went on to win the game thanks to first-half goals from Daniel Sturridge and Dele Alli to ensure they have maximum points from their opening two World Cup qualifiers.
Next up for England is a trip to Ljubljana to face Slovenia on Tuesday with Gibbs set to be included in the travelling party after being called-up to replace Bertrand, the __football Association have confirmed.
Gibbs made his international debut in 2010 in a 2-1 friendly win against Hungary and has gone on to win 10 caps for the senior side.
The defender will join up with Gareth Southgate’s squad on Sunday as they begin their preparations for the clash against Slovenia.
Gibbs becomes the third Gunner in the England squad alongside Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Walcott started Saturday’s win over Malta, lasting 68 minutes before being replaced by Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford, while Oxlade-Chamberlain was an unused substitute.
Despite his call-up Gibbs is unlikely to start on Tuesday, with Rose expected to get the nod. However, his inclusion in the squad may raise a few eyebrows as he has started just once for Arsenal so far this season, the League Cup win over Nottingham Forest.
