Nacho Monreal has been playing some of the best football of his career lately, and the left-back has spoken on Arsenal’s about how pleased he is with his current form.
Arsenal fans used to cringe when they saw Monreal’s name on the teamsheet ahead of Keiran Gibbs’, but the Spaniard has looked like a different player this season and has usurped the England international as our first choice left-back.
He spoke on Arsenal player recently about his fantastic form, and claims his excellent performances this season have been down to his confidence.
“I’m very happy with the games that I’ve played,” he said.
“This season I feel very well with a high confidence and I’m playing most games. I feel fit so I’m happy with my game.
“I would like to get back and play for the national team but I know it’s very difficult because there are three or four other players at the moment who play left back and they are younger [than me].
“It’s complicated but I’m very happy because I’m playing really well for Arsenal. I will try to do it and if I play for Spain one more time or more, I will be proud.”
Gibbs has always been our first choice, but his constant injury problems meant he was not ever able to play full seasons. When Andre Santos was shipped out everyone let out a sigh of relief, but there were fears we had made the same mistake with Monreal.
These fears have been allayed this campaign however, and the 29-year-old has not only made the left-back spot his own, but shown that he can be an emergency option at centre-back as well.
The fact that he is unlikely to be considered for the Spain side for too much longer is also good news, as there will be no risk of injury or fatigue during international breaks.
