Arsene Wenger was speaking after our 2-1 win over Newcastle United, and claims we have to focus on ourselves rather than those around us, as reported by .
As the season edges closer to a conclusion, many are starting to realise that Chelsea don’t quite have it all sewn up. It would still be a tall order for anyone to topple Jose Mourinho’s side, but they aren’t looking as dominant as they were in the first half of the season.
Wenger insists that Chelsea still have enough of a cushion atop the table however, and believes we have to just focus on winning our remaining games rather than looking at those around us.
“Look, Chelsea have a good security and at the moment, I feel they have enough cushion to be quite serene,” Wenger said.
“We have Manchester City in front of us and behind us, it is tight as well — the only thing we can do is to win our games.
“I think Chelsea have too much security. I just think at the moment we are not concluding, we are in a fight. You have seen the game today — in every game, we need to turn up and fight until the last minute to get the points.
“That’s what we have to do, just go for the next game and win it. Look, the players want to do as well as they can. We know we have a fight first to be in the top four. We will go step by step, game by game.”
Chelsea still have two games in hand, and are unlikely to let their lead slip. Manchester City have been totally erratic however, and second place is more than within our reach.
We have to be aware of those behind us however, and Manchester United and Liverpool are both capable of catching us. We opened up a slight gap with our win over the Magpies, but one of the two will more than likely close the gap tomorrow.
It’s difficult to know who to route for, with a draw seeming like the best result for us. Liverpool are in the in-form team in the league at the moment, and the longer that continues the more confidence they will garner from it.
Man United on the other hand, are just four points behind us, and a win at Anfield would reduce the gap to just a point once again.
