Could a Theo Walcott and Raheem Sterling swap be on the cards

Will Theo sign da ting?

There have been on-going stories about Theo Walcott’s possible departure from Arsenal this summer. Theo has 15 months left on his contract and it seems he’s been reluctant to “sign da ting”. Again. Despite the fact he has scored three goals this term Arsene Wenger has used him sporadically.

It’s obvious that Theo lacks sharpness and his touch is still too heavy so it’s no wonder Wenger puts more faith in Alexis and Welbeck than in the speedy winger. Now, it’s no wonder why Walcott hasn’t replicated his form from 2012-13 yet – he has spent a year on the sidelines and needs good work over the summer more than anybody else in our team.

However, if Walcott leaves  an old rumour might come back to life again. In November 2012, while Walcott was considering his options, he was linked with a departure to Liverpool. According to that story, Arsenal would send Walcott and £8m to Anfield in exchange for Raheem Sterling.

Now, the Liverpool youngster has become a top player in the last two seasons even though it’s obvious he’s far from being the finished article but there is one connection between him and Walcott – neither of them have signed fresh terms with their respective club. If Liverpool fail to reach a Champions League place, Sterling might be tempted to do one and join Arsenal to actually taste the Champions League beyond the Group Stage. On the other hand, Walcott had grown up as a Liverpool supporter before he joined Arsenal so perhaps he wouldn’t mind swapping shirts with Sterling on a permanent basis.

Also, if Greg Dyke’s new initiative about home-grown players gets approval, it would make both Arsenal and Liverpool reluctant to lose players who qualify under this rule. In this case both Arsenal and Liverpool wouldn’t damage their home-grown quota.

Sterling is a quick player with electric pace and has the ability to play as both a No. 10 and as a winger. He has been deployed as a sole striker by Rodgers due to Sturridge’s injury but his finishing still needs improvement.

What do you think, my dear Gooners? Could this almost forgotten rumour become true?
