Arsenal are lining up a bid for Atletico Madrid and Uruguay starlet Jose Maria Gimenez, according to reports.
The Sun on Sunday say Manchester United are also interested in the 21-year-old centre-back.
It is claimed Gimenez is keen on a move to the Emirates.
The youngster has 20 months left on his Atletico contract which contains a release clause of £54million.
Ozil in advanced contract talks
Mesut Ozil is ready to commit his future to Arsenal, writes Steve Stammers.
Midfield star Ozil's been in brilliant form this season and the Gunners' hierarchy are confident he will sign a new £160,000-a-week, five-year deal.
Talks are at an advanced stage and will continue after the international break, with a club source claiming on Saturday night, “we are getting closer”.
The 28-year-old, who scored a wonder-goal in Tuesday’s 3-2 Champions League win over Ludogorets, has less than two years left on his current deal and boss Arsene Wenger wants to ensure the Germany international remains at the Emirates.

Wenger: Spurs won't ever escape our shadow
Arsene Wenger has stoked up Sunday’s North London derby by claiming Tottenham will NEVER be as big as Arsenal, writes Steve Stammers.
Gunners boss Wenger said: “We have a strong fan base, maybe the strongest in London. And as long as we do our job, Arsenal will always be the stronger.
“I just think about Arsenal and to make us as big as possible, to make us stronger and stronger."
And Wenger believes that Tottenham's new ground development means nothing.
“No position is guaranteed,” he said. “It is about doing our job.
"But at the end of the day everything is decided by what happens on the pitch. That is what the size of a club is about – consistency at the top level. That is what size is about.”
Cech: Spurs clash is title race six-pointer
Petr Cech reckons Sunday could see the most exciting North London derby for years as both sides chase their title dream, writes Steve Stammers.
And Arsenal keeper Cech says the expectation that grips the fans also spreads to the players.
“It is the first fixture you look for, 100 per cent,” he said. “When the programme comes out the first thing you look for is Spurs home and away.
“That is still the biggest game of the year for Arsenal fans. That is the way it is.”
What adds spice to this edition of a clash always laced with passion is that both the Gunners and Tottenham are pushing for the title.
It makes a difference to the match with more than local pride at stake.
“There is an element of this,” said Cech. “We are very close in the table and this season we are all very tight.”
