According to reports by The Daily Mail and The Mirror, newly crowned Spanish champions Real Madrid are eyeing a double swoop for Arsenal’s star midfielder Alex Song and solid centre-back Thomas Vermaelen.
Alex Song has had a break-through season of sorts, adding a top-class creative dimension to his tough defensive style. In a season where Arsenal have oddly been without a key play-maker, Song stepped up to the plate showcasing his creative potential and amassing an incredible 14 assists this campaign.
It does make you wonder how Alex Song wasn’t shortlisted for the PFA award ahead of Scott Parker. Surely the fact that he is being linked with Inter Milan and Real Madrid says enough about the man. Perhaps his transition of sorts from a pure defensive midfielder to a deep-lying play-maker had some influence on the decision.
I digress, Real Madrid are also apparently after star centre-back Thomas Vermaelen. The Verminator has been a solid presence since he has come to the Emirates and has become an integral part of Arsenal’s defence alongside Koscielny.
His aggressive style of defence and his aerial prowess have seen him become one of the best defenders in the Premier League and with Koscielny improving by leaps and bounds this season Arsenal’s heart of defence finally looks the part.
Obviously being stories from the Daily Mail and the Mirror, the credibility of the claims is relatively low, particularly when you factor in they have stated no reliable source.
But if reports were to be true, it would an absolutely massive blow to Arsenal if they even lost one of these two players. It definitely seems they are more or less false, but we can only speculate until more concrete evidence surfaces.
What do you guys think? Do you think these reports are true? How do you rate Alex Song and Thomas Vermaelen? If they were to leave would you prefer Yann M’Vila or Jan Vertonghen anyway? Feel free to leave a comment below!
