"The players are ecstatic. I thought we caused our own problems in the first half giving the penalty away and not getting the ball quick enough.

"The players were a credit. Our keeper David Marshall has had a hard time of late but he was magnificent today.

"Robert Snodgrass had the most believable swollen ankle at one point which disappeared overnight. He showed great character.

In specific moments I enjoyed the performance. At others it was difficult.

It was a brilliant performance for 84 minutes, but for the last six minutes it was not too nice, not just because we conceded a goal but we stopped trying to do the right things.

I don’t think anyone needs me to describe how good Philippe Coutinho is, you can see it.

But Roberto Firmino? it should have been a close race today. Sadio Mane played well, and Emre Can. It is not easy to pick this team.

Gini Wijnaldum is in good form, Daniel Sturridge is always close to the team, Alberto is in good form and Simon Mignolet as well.

I suppose it would take a while to defend having Michael Carrick AND Marouane Fellaini in the starting XI.

Here's what he said…

It’s what we have.

Valencia, Bailly, Smalling and Shaw, all four they cannot play.

Valencia had a surgery in his arm, Bailly has a long-term knee injury, Smalling doesn’t feel that he can play 100 per cent with his pain and Luke Shaw last morning told me was not in condition to play.

So we had to build a defensive line and to be honest I trust the four boys that are on the pitch.

The players that are here today are the players who want to be, they want to fight, they want to believe with myself that we have a difficult match but it is a match that we can be successful so when I go with the players that are convinced they can do it I’m very confident.

I know that Ashley Young is not a right-back but he is a champion.

Darmian is always ready to do his best. Phil Jones understands the moment of the team and he understands that we are in trouble so he is ready to go and he has accelerated his process.

His process should take a little bit more time but he has put himself on the line for the team.

Sadio Mane got a run on his man and neatly flicked home Philippe Coutinho’s cross.

Coutinho himself has hit the bar (albeit he was offside) and the side netting. Roberto Firmino should have done better in a one-on-one situation, while Lucas has hit goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.

Mane is being given far too much room to run straight at the Watford defence and it’s causing some real problems for the visitors.

Liverpool’s ability to transform defence into attack really is lovely to watch. But they must be careful of the Hornets here.

Watford have got in behind the Reds defence already and could hit them with a sucker punch if they’re not careful.
